So what's your career? Empty
PostSubject: So what's your career?   So what's your career? I_icon_minitimeWed Jun 09, 2010 5:58 pm

I've been talking to our man Figgems a lot lately about jobs and I'm curious as to everyone's history when it comes to working for money to get what they want. Here's my history:

1. Janitor in a High School when I was 14. It sounds bad but here is what happened. For four hours a day, we'd be in a building that we hated for like 9 months of the year and were expected to clean it. There was very little cleaning involved for us though. For an hour we'd scrap gum and what not off desks and tables and chairs. But for the other 3 hours, we'd play card games (our best game was Spit), we throw a frisbee in the halls, play ball in the gym, just rock out to music! Our favorite game though was Man Hunt in the basement. No lights, huge pipes along the walls and ceiling forcing us to crouch, spider webs, dust, everything! It was amazing cause it set up the perfect atmosphere. The best place in the huge underground was this small door in the ceiling in the very back. Even the actual janitors didn't know what it was cause it was sealed shut. One of these days I'll go back and check it out (we were all terrified of it of course back then lol)

2. I was one of the helpers at our Public Library. Shelving books, movies and cd's wasn't ideal but with my friends as the other helpers, we had a blast. It was the loudest library I've ever seen. We'd bring games to the back room and just not do work cause the head Librarian didn't care. The best thing that happened there was when we closed up at night. We brought in those Lazer Tag toys, smoke machines (no idea where one of the supervisors got one) and absolutely annihilated the place. It was worth it! My main defense (which was an awesome idea) was using one of those carts that we haul books on as cover. Epic!!!

3. Accounts Payable Intern. Not exciting at all. No real good stories except for a hot supervisor. Razz

4. Then I was a Warehouse Assistant. This was a blast. Because of this I would love to always work in a warehouse. Loud music blasting while just chilling filling orders for people wanting who knows what. We had fork lift races, random sword fights (using PVC pipes) while on top of racks and other workers driving the fork lifts with us on them, baseball (breaking lights while playing). Probably my favorite job I've had.

5. Then I was a camp counselor which made me truly hate kids. Besides the random few that I actually liked, I couldn't stand the whining and crying and just utter crap. And we got shit pay.

6. I was semi of a security guard in Hofstra for my last year there. I would have to let people into the dorms who didn't have access while taking their ID's as collateral (is that the right word? sure lol) The hours were actually not bad for me (4-8 am) cause I got the best pay and no one bothered me. All i did was play video games on my PS2 that I brought with me to the booths.

7. Right now I'm part time at Kohls which blows donkey nuts. Dealing with annoying customers who leave clothes and shoes lying around wherever they feel like is a huge pet peeve for me right now. And the hours suck, I have no social life at night cause of it.

8. And I recently picked up a temp job where all I do is scan documents onto a computer. yay (but pretty good pay at the moment)

so let's hear your history...if any of you are willing to share that is lol

Lol, well I'm still pretty young so I really don't have that many job experiences but here:

1. I worked as a muralist at my elementary school, painting murals all over the school (in classrooms, stairways, hallway, lunchroom, parking lot, etc.). If you ever stop by Chicago, and go to Chinatown, the elementary school there covered in murals is the one! This job was pretty good because all we did was paint for 4 hours. Most of the time we could usually take breaks and basically do whatever we want in the classroom. But our supervisor, who was a teacher, took our jobs very seriously and came to check up on us every once in a while. Getting caught taking a break by this supervisor was probably the worst part of this job. He always made us stay in 15 minutes later to lecture us about what to do and what not to do. -___-

2. I was a cashier/drink maker at Bobabar Cafe (which, incidentally is located right next to the elementary school above ^). This job was pretty cool and chill. I learned how to make smoothies and other stuff and the boss there was really awesome. When there weren't any customers we would just sit back and chill chatting. The bad thing about this job is that the bosses' aunt worked there as a cook and she thought she was in charge of everything. She was super sexist and let the guys chill and play cards while she scrutinized girls whenever we were chilling out.

3. I also worked at a Chinese restaurant in downtown Chicago called 65 Asian Kitchen. It's kind of like Panda Express if you guys have that around your area. But the ladies who worked there thought I scooped the food too slow for the customers and made me be the cashier... Haha lucky me.

As you can see, I have very little job experience. I applied for GameStop once for a summer job but never heard from them until the winter so of course, I had to decline because of school. Lololol

I've only had 2 jobs which I still have since I was about 16 or so.

1) Notary Public

2) Working with in my father's business as an intern/accountant/notary and whatever else he's not to good at i.e working with Microsoft Office. He just told me to start managing his blog for the company as well.

3) I've done some promotional jobs for Hershey's and Coke. Easiest money I ever made. $18 an hr for just passing out Hershey's chocolate or flyers for about 8-10 hrs. lol!

But, I've never had the incentive to work for anyone tho. I rather go by my own rules and work for myself. afro

Let's see here:

1.) When I was 14 I started detassling corn during the summers (Did it for three years). I had to wake up when it was still dark out, get a ride to the fields and we usually didn't get done until around noonish. Sure it killed some of my summer time, but I was getting paid and got to talk to a lot of kids my age while working.

2.) When I turned 16 I started working at the 'legendary' Taylor's Maid Rite (It's a local sandwich shop that's been around for over 80 years. Decent sammiches, but a touch on the pricey side.). This has been my favorite job to date. I got to chat with customers (The regulars there kick ass), flirt with girls, and the owner of the place freaking loved me (Whenever they needed some extra cleaning or the such done, I'd usually volunteer because I'm awesome like that). I worked for over two years, and the funny thing is I still have family that works there (One of my aunts, my sister, and one of my cousins.).

3.) After the Maid Rite I started working at Lennox Industries (A company that makes heaters and ACs. If you look at the one in your building, there's a good chance it's made by Lennox) for a year and a half. I pretty much hated this job except for a couple of people that I worked with. The only good thing I can think of that came from this job is that they trained me in brazing (It's kinda like welding, but usually copper to copper), so I could technically get a job a NASA if they ever start building spacecrafts again.

4.) My current job is working at Cooper-er InterFace Sealing Solutions (They were bought about a month or two after I started there). I've technically been working there for over two years, but I was laid off due to lack of work for nearly a year there (Yay economy). We build gaskets for a lot of different companies (Lennox, Saur-Danfoss, Kawasaki to name a few). My job is Material Prep, which means I get the material ready for the machines that actually make the gaskets. It's a pretty easy job for the most part, a little heavy lifting but not too bad. I work second shift (3:30 to midnight) and the people I work with are pretty cool. Since I got called back from lay off we've been working overtime of some sort, but this has been the first week we've actually had regular hours. I got called back about 5 months ago so I was stuck working until 1 or 2 in the morning every day for 5 freaking months. Oh well, I get paid pretty freaking good so I can't complain too much lol.

Lol

1. I ran a concession stand out of a skatepark for about 6 months for my first job, pay was crap but the perks were great. I was 16, and I ended up falling off a 12 foot halfpipe while on break, an cracked some ribs, so I stopped going, lol.

2. When I was 18, I washed dishes at a small resteraunt down the street, I only worked there for 2 weeks, and I got fired cause I got food poisoniing, lol.

3. At 19, I got a job at Accra Pac, shredding papers in their office. Very blah annoying to stand still infront of a wirring machine feeding it paper.

4. At around 21, I still worked at Accra Pac, but I also picked up a 1 am paper route, but that only lasted about 6 months.

5. When I was 22, Accra Pac got bought out by Kik Custom Products, and I got moved up to a accounts receivable desk job, mostly invoicing and data entry, I was also put incharge of the archives, but that was annoying and back breaking, lol.

Then a few months b4 my 5th anniversary working at the same place, my boss joined a 'competing' company, and I got fired outta revenge, as a 'cost cutting measure', they then hired someone to do the same job as I used to, but with 3x the pay, and no idea what they were doing. lol

PS. Working sucks, and so I avoid it like the plauge, lol Razz

19 - Worked at a Car Wash for a year... Jeeze louise did I hate this job, but getting to wash and wax for free was a good perk. Started instructor training in martial arts.

20 - Enlisted in Marine reserves. Went to training and comm school to be a rifleman and an information systems specialist.

Worked at Target a bit this year as stockroom and sales floor. Ok job, no perks, crap hours.

I continued my instructor training and got hired on. A month later I was shipped to Iraq.

21 - Iraq. 7 months of 12 hour shifts each day of the week. No overtime pay. Sad . Officers are stupid with computers... yet they all hold degrees.

22 - 23 - Officemax. Worked logistics (more stock stuff). Did a store remodel during overnight hours. Pretty fun for the most part. Showed up to work drunk more often than not. Almost got killed twice by my roomate trying to drop shit on me while we were working.

24 - Unemployed due to a broken femur

25 - KGB... answering retarted ass questions from people that I'm surprised can even text. Currently looking for better work. Thinking about going back to instructor training to get spun up, in better shape and fun work again.

full time broke college student right now...until May (graduation!).

then I'm fucked...lol. who knows after that...Criminal Justice/Spanish double major. So maybe a government job can land on my feet or something. Either that or work the corners...hehe.

in all seriousness, I'm in the midst of applying for two service programs right now for after graduation: City Year and Teach for America. Hoping to land the latter, originally in school to be a teacher (long story short, Teacher's Ed got the ax here until 2013). let's just see what happens.....
